Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes
We’re often asked if its possible to really reverse Type 2 Diabetes?
The answer to that question is a resounding yes!
Consider the following:
-Type 2 Diabetes affects approximately 29.1 million Americans (9.3%)
-8 million are undiagnosed
Type 2 Diabetes is implicated in all of the following chronic illnesses:
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Depression/anxiety/memory loss/dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease
- Balance disorders/vertigo
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Digestive disorders
- Hormone imbalances
- Kidney failure
- Chronic skin problems
- Blindness/ visual problems
- Kidney failure
- Erectile dysfunction
- Autoimmune disease
- Cardiovascular disease
Insulin is a very important hormone that puts useless blood glucose into your cells where it is used as energy. Simply put, in Type 2 Diabetes, there is not too little insulin (as many think) but too much! When insulin is elevated for a period of time cells get desensitized to it and it can no longer do their job. The symptoms of chronically high levels of insulin then become the same as if it was low.
When cells stop listening to insulin this is known as insulin resistance. A good analogy is if your boss was yelling at you and you could not quit your job. Eventually, you would tune the boss out. This is what happens in insulin resistance or Type 2 Diabetes.
What is the medical solution to this? Well, our pharmaceutically driven medical system’s “standard of care” is to give you medication that basically increases your insulin even more! This is equivalent to your boss yelling at you louder and louder! It might work for a while but eventually, communication will break down.
From a functional medicine point of view, the culprits behind elevated blood sugar and elevated insulin have to be identified and removed. There are many more culprits to elevated blood sugar and elevated insulin than diet and exercise.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) continues to promote blood sugar disorders and will for decades to come. Some have predicted that the diabetic explosion will bankrupt the national healthcare system. Diabetes is on the rise and is the leading cause of blindness, amputations, kidney failure, and neuropathy in the United States. Over 26 million Americans are affected by diabetes, at an annual cost of over $218 billion per year (American Diabetes Association). Diabetes is a growing problem in industrialized countries, primarily due to a lack of lifestyle education and physical activity, as well as the consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient, processed foods.
Diabetes disrupts all aspects of human physiology. There are different categories of blood sugar handling issues: reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, below 60) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar, above 100). Contrary to popular belief diabetes is not a blood sugar issue, it is 100% of the time an insulin issue. High blood sugar is a symptom of insulin resistance or a lack of insulin production.
We recognize that your symptoms, fluctuating blood sugar levels, lack of energy and stubborn pounds and inches aren’t the real problem. Rather, it’s the underlying cause that’s the real issue. We look at how everything works together, your organs and body systems that affect your blood sugar. The truth is, it’s rarely just ONE organ or system that causes your blood sugar problems.
There are many hidden causes of elevated blood sugar, here are some just to name a few:
- Diagnosed or undiagnosed thyroid issues
- Food Sensitivities
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Poor liver function
- Toxins from food, water, and your environment
“It is estimated that 20% of type 2 diabetics are misdiagnosed and are actually suffering from Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). These diabetics are typically not overweight and live a healthy lifestyle, but still remain on insulin as a result of pancreatic destruction.”
We dig deep and look at many more indicators than what a traditional doctor might find. We search for nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and specific organ dysfunction, all potential causes that might otherwise be missed!
Did you know that the size of diabetic’s brain shrinks twice as fast every year compared to a non-diabetic?!
